Each year, the August fullmoon is widely recognised by the world. So this year, the Ministry of Culture and Sports organises events with free entrance to archaeological sites, monuments and museums in the country where the public will have the opportunity to enjoy a night in the light of the August moon.

The events start on August 11th till August 19th. So far, 97 archaeological sites are expected to remain open for the public to enjoy the glamorous summer full moon, while several of the sites are scheduled to host  musical events.

 

SUNDAY 11 AUGUST 2019
REGION OF CENTRAL MACEDONIA
  • Experimental Park of Livithron “Melodic Moon of August”. Musical event with the musical team of Georgios Andreou and Korina Legaki, co-organized by the National Theater of Pieria and the “Lefkarias Kriaras” Leptokarya Arts Center.
REGION OF PELOPONNESE
  • Archaeological Site of Peristeria Music performance in collaboration with the Municipality of Trifylia.
MONDAY 12 AUGUST 2019
REGION OF CENTRAL MACEDONIA
  • Galerian Complex Live music program. The space will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 23:00.
  • Rotunda The monument will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 22:00.

EPIRUS REGION
  • Archaeological Site of Great Gardikiou. Music concert with Eleni Tsaligopoulou, co-organized with the Municipality of Zitsa from 20:00 to 24:00

REGION OF CRETE
  • Archaeological Site of Aptera. The venue will be open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
WESTERN GREECE
  • Archaeological Site of Pleuronas. In the yard of premises music night with Rita Antonopoulou, in collaboration with the Intellectual Center of I. P. Mesolongi, from 21:00 to 23:00
REGION OF CENTRAL MACEDONIA
  • Ancient Akanthos (Ierissos) The Association of Friends of the Environment of Ierissos, in collaboration with the Office of Antiquities of Chalkidiki and Mount Athos, hosts an evening of Greek music with Evi Siamantas accompanied by a piano, saxophone and percussion at Aravogi of ancient Akanthos in Ierissos, Halkidiki. (The archaeological site will remain open from 20:00 until 24:00)
Region of Western Macedonia
  • Archaeological site of Petronas Amyndeou. Theatrical performance  by Pandemonium 7

REGION OF EASTERN MAKEDONIA – THRACE
  • The Archaeological Museum of Komotini will be open to the public from 20.00 to 24.00
  • The Ancient Theater of Maronia will be open to the public from 20.00 to 24.00
  • Zona Concert Hall Concert of Greek music with Yiota Nega. Opening hours 20:30. Start of event 21:00. The space will remain open to the public until 24:00
  • Archaeological site of Abderon. The space will remain open to the public from 19:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological site of Kali Vrissi. Music event titled “The Gemma of the Moon”
  • Archeological Museum of Drama. Open to the public from 21.00-24.00
  • Hellenistic tomb of Troya Street. Open to the public from 20.00-22.00
REGION OF CENTRAL MACEDONIA
  • Central Avenue of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Concert with the band “Gaias’ Mediam” with traditional songs and art. Entrance will be open to the public at the Museum’s open-air exhibitions from 20:00 to 23:00
  • Museum of Byzantine Culture “Full moon at the Museum” The audience will enjoy favourite songs from the Greek and International repertoire (starting at 21:30) The museum will remain open to the public until 21.00. Free admission to the permanent & periodical exhibitions of the Museum from 18:30 to 21:00
  • Archaeological Site of Aigon. Ancient space of the Royal Tomb Museum. Concert of traditional and modern music. Start time: 21:00
  • Ancient Theater of Miesas. Concert with Loudovikos of Anogia: “On the moon the silver” Start time: 22:00
  • Archaeological Museum of Veria. The museum will remain open until midnight.
  • Archaeological Museum of Pella. Music concert 21.00-23.00
  • Old Metropolis of Edessa. Open to the public from 20:00 until 24:00
  • Archaeological Site of Logos Edessa. The room will be open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00

  • Byzantine Castle of Ancient Pydna. Musical event with Hestia Pierides Muses of Katerini entitled “August Moon” (it is happening in the context of the Olympus Festival).
  • Dion Archaeological Park. Open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
EPIRUS REGION
  • Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa. The permanent exhibition of the museum will be open to the public from 20:00 to 23:00.
  • Archaeological Site of Dodoni. Music concert with Dimitris Papadimitriou, co-organised with the Municipality of Dodoni. Opening hours 20:00 to 24:00.
  • Archaeological Site of Ioannina Castle. Music concert with Dimitris Yfantis and Angeliki Toumpanaki, co-organized with the Municipality of Ioannina. Opening hours 20:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis. It will remain open to the public from 20.00 to 24.00
  • Necromanteo Archaeological Site. It will remain open to the public from 20.00 to 24.00
THESSALY REGION
  • Center of Documentation and Education of Theopetra Cave. Free admission to the Center for the public from 20:00 to 23:00.
  • Byzantine Castle of Trikala. The venue will be open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00.
IONIAN ISLANDS DISTRICT
  • Domegnini Tower, Argassi, Zakynthos. Visual performance. The monument will remain open from 21:00 until 24:00
  • Castle of Agia Mavra, Lefkada. Open without event
  • Old Fortress of Corfu. Music Event
REGION OF WESTERN GREECE
  • Ancient site of  Agrinio Archaeological Museum. Musical event / presentation of the orchestral work “Birds belong to the sky – Les Oiseaus sont dans les Ciel” (suites for ballet and cinema suites for string orchestra) and melodious poems by Federico Garcia Lorca by Georgios Seferis and of other European Poets in collaboration with Mr. A. Katerinopoulos and the Quartet of Athens State Orchestra Aenaion (hours 21.00-23.00)
  • Cervantes Park, Venetian Port of Nafpaktos. Music event with the Aegean jazz quartet sponsored by Bridge Charilaos Trikoupis. (hours 21.00-23.00)
  • Archaeological Museum of Patras. The museum will remain open from 20:00 until 24:00
  • Archaeological Museum of Olympia. Music event in collaboration with the Municipality of Ancient Olympia
  • Archaeological site of Olympia. The space will be open to the public from 21:00 to 24:00

  • Delphi Archaeological Site will remain open to the public until 24.00 (last entrance at 23.30)
  • Archaeological Site of Lamia Castle – Archaeological Museum. Music event; the venue will remain open from 20:00 until 24:00
  • Byzantine Museum of Fthiotida at Ypati. Musical event. The room will remain open from 20:00 until 24:00
  • Acropolis of Proeronas – New Monastery of Domokos. Music event. The room will remain open from 20:00 until 01:30
  • Archaeological site of Alyki. Music event near the acropolis of Sifon (Tifous). It is starting at 21:30.
  • Archaeological Museum of Thebes. The Museum will be open to the public with free admission from 08:00 to 20:00
REGION OF ATTICA
  • National Archaeological Museum.
  • Archaeological site of Amphiriou in Oropos. The venue will be open to the public until 24.00 with an event that includes recorded recitations of poems by prominent Greek poets and music.
  • Western Hills. The space remains open to the public 24 hours a day. This particular archaeological site contains the hill of Filopappou and the hills of the Observatory (hill of the Nymphs) and Pnyx. This is an ideal place for enjoying the August Full Moon, both for its splendid view of the Acropolis and for its particular natural environment.
  • Chora of Kythera Castle and Permanent Exhibition of Eighth Anniversaries. The Chora of Kythera Castle and the Permanent Exhibition of Eighth Monuments will remain open to the public until 24:00 without events.
REGION OF PELOPONNESE
  • Archaeological Site of Palamidi Fortress. Music event. The archaeological site will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00.
  • Archaeological Site and Museum of Ancient Corinth. The space will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00.
  • Archaeological Site and Museum of Isthmia. The site will remain open to the public from 20:00 until 24:00
  • Archaeological Site and Museum of Ancient Nemea. The site will be open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological Site and Sikyon Museum. The space will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological Site of Kalamata Castle. The site  will remain open for the public until 24:00.
  • Ancient Theater of Mantineia. Music event dedicated to Manos Hatzidakis.
REGION OF NORTH AEGEAN
  • Mithymna  Fortress together with August fullmoon: Musical event at the Mithymna Fortress with Anastasios Mavroudis (violin) and Andreas Chalkias (guitar)
  • Archaeological site of Emporio of Chios. The archaeological site will be open to the public from 19:00 until 01:00 am the next day. A guided tour by archaeologists will take place.
  • Iustiniani Palace in Chios Castle. The monument will be open to the public and illuminated from 21.00 to 01.00 am the next day.
  • Byzantine Museum of Chios in the city of Chios. The museum will be open to the public and illuminated from 21.00 to 01.00 morning of the following day.
  • Building of the Dark Prison at Chios Castle. The museum will be open to the public and illuminated from 21.00 to 01.00 morning of the next day
  • Ottoman Bath in Chios Castle. The monument will be open to the public and illuminated from 21.00 to 01.00 morning of the following day
  • Archontiko Psaron Archaeological Area. Musical evening with a music band from 21.00 to 01.00 morning of the following day.
  • Archaeological Museum of Vathy (Samos). The museum will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological site of Heraion (Samos) The space will be open from 20.00 to 24.00
  • Archaeological Museum of Ag. Kirykou (Ikaria) The museum will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00
SOUTH AEGEAN REGION
  • Ancient Acropolis of Rhodes. The space will remain open to the public from 20:00 to 24:00. A musical event may be held in cooperation with the South Aegean Region.
  • Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. The Museum will remain open beyond its hours from 21.00 to 24.00.
  • Sacred Neptune and Amphitrite in Kionia, Tinos. The space will be open to the public from 21.00 to 24.00
  • Iria Naxos. The space will remain open to the public from 21:00 to 24:00
  • Archaeological Museum of Paros. The space will be open to the public from 21:00 to 24:00
  • Saint Andrew Archaeological Site in Sifnos. The site will remain open to the public from 21.00 to 24.00
  • Archaeological Museum of Milos. The Museum will remain open beyond its hours from 21.00 to 24.00.
REGION OF CRETE
  • Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (garden) Music event in the garden of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (The permanent and periodical exhibitions of the Museum will not remain open after 20:00)
  • Archaeological site of Rokka. Concert with the National Symphonic Orchestra of New Crete (chorus of Chania and Heraklion) under the direction of Miltos Logiadis, from 20:00 to 24:00.
  • The archaeological site of Gortynas. Music evening in the Light of the Full Moon in the Archaeological Site of Gortynas, co-organised of the Mesaras Cultural Association Network and the Municipality of Gortynas. The archaeological site will remain open from 21:00 until the end of the event.
  • Archaeological site of TylisosJazz night dedicated to the memory of Constantine Kouvidis” with the musical “Tribute to Jazz Classics“, co-organised by EFAI, Tylisos Cultural Association and the Municipality of Malevizi. The archaeological site will remain open from 21:00 until the end of the event.

  • Archaeological Site of MaliaSummer concert. A night with George Katsaros”. The archaeological site will be open from 21:00 until the end of the event.
REGION OF WESTERN MACEDONIA

REGION OF PELOPONNESE
  • Dion Archaeological Park “Take a walk on the moon“. Music event with the Youth Orchestra of the Center for Literature and Arts in Dion, co-organised by the Hellenic National Film Festival and the Olympus Festival Organisation. The entrance to the archaeological park will be free on the day of the event at 20.00-24.00
SEPTEMBER 17 AUGUST 2019

  • Archaeological Museum of Neapolis Voion. “The statues … and the garden“: a tour of the exhibition of the Neapolis Voion Archaeological Museum, reading of excerpts from Mrs E.
