Elounda is a pretty fishing village in east Crete, north of Agios Nikolaos and south of the seaside resort of Plaka in Crete.
It is an ideal destination for people who want a seaside holiday in a place which is neither too busy nor too isolated, having a spectacular coastline,
shaded beaches, crystal clear seas, archeological interest.
Probably the first thing you’ll do when you arrive in Elounda is to take a walk around the central town.
Walk along the harbour to the east and you’ll pass some of Elounda’s popular tavernas before you come to the main beach.
If you walk south along the harbour front, you’ll be rewarded with some of the town’s more exclusive restaurants overlooking the bay.
Don’t forget to take a boat trip to Spinalonga which is is a former leper colony from 1905 to 1957.
Sufferers from Greece were forcibly relocated
to the island in an attempt to stop the spread of the leprosy.
The leper colony on Spinalonga was closed in 1957, some years after a cure was found for the terrible disease.
The town of Agios Nikolaos is approximately 10km south of Elounda and it is a good choice if you’re looking for somewhere a bit more lively for a night out.
Of course, you must visit the famous Great Palace of Knossos which is 75 km from Elounda Beach.
